Job Description

Aspen Valley Land Trust (AVLT) permanently protects the special places and signature landscapes of the Roaring Fork and Colorado River Valleys for the benefit of wildlife, agriculture, and community. Our organization is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic supporter of land and water conservation to serve as Communications Manager. This position is crucial to help raise awareness of AVLT’s work within the many communities we serve and will be responsible for all organizational communications, marketing, and branding along with supporting general fundraising and community events.


Our Communications Manager will contribute greatly to outreach efforts by creating and managing all print and electronic communications, including websites, social media, newsletters, e-blasts, brochures, and advertising. This position will also be responsible for supporting general fundraising efforts, and capital campaigns by writing donor-centric communications and engaging stories about the importance of local land and water conservation and its impact on our different communities, both wild and human.

This position will require occasional travel within and outside of AVLT’s service area and occasional work during evenings and weekends. Flexible work hours and some telecommuting options may be arranged. This position reports to and is supervised by our Philanthropy Director.


To be successful in this position, applicants should be self-motivated, flexible and adaptable, with a positive, team-oriented attitude. Applicants must be comfortable working independently at times, and closely with our Philanthropy Director as necessary, to produce deliverables on schedule. A spirit of curiosity, learning, open-mindedness, and a sense of humor are all very useful qualities.


Communications & Content Creation (70%)

  • Generate regular written content for all AVLT communication needs.
  • Refine and implement communications, marketing, and branding strategies.
  • Collaborate on production and distribution of communication deliverables, including but not limited to: annual reports, fundraising appeals, brochures, digital and print advertisements, website content, quarterly e-newsletters, press releases, and periodic e-mail blasts.
  • Develop regular content for social media and websites and assist in managing social media accounts and multiple websites.
  • Generate and evaluate metrics for communication effectiveness and develop improvements.
  • Build relationships with media outlets to enable wider distribution of AVLT stories.
  • Coordinate and help develop short film concepts and production.
  • Coordinate and organize photo and video content for use in communications and outreach.

Fundraising & Public Outreach (30%)

  • Assist with community outreach, targeted fundraising, capital campaigns, and AVLT events.
  • Engage with and assist with improvements to donor database and management strategies.
  • Contribute to content and design of AVLT’s public presentations and grant applications.
  • Stay current with relevant issues and trends on conservation, communications, and outreach, and build professional skills through research, training, and networking.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Highly proficient and creative writing skills with the ability to produce multiple pieces weekly.
  • Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and interpersonal).
  • Interest in and commitment to land and water conservation.
  • Highly organized and able to track and work on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Highly developed computer skills including proficiency with: Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, and Powerpoint), Google Docs, social media, MailChimp (or other web-based email platforms).
  • Ability to produce content for websites and social media.
  • Ability to occasionally work evenings and weekends and provide personal vehicle for transportation as necessary.
  • Ability to engage with donor database software.
  • Demonstrated ability to shoot and edit photos and videos preferred.
  • Familiarity and knowledge of Roaring Fork and Colorado River valleys preferred.
  • Bilingual fluency (English/Spanish) preferred.

Relevant Experience:

  • Academic experience in communications, marketing, or relevant field required.
  • Two years or more professional experience in communications, marketing, or related positions.
  • Experience working for a nonprofit or land conservation organization preferred.

Other Details:

  • Start date targeted between February - March, 2020.
  • Compensation will be commensurate with relevant experience.
