Since its inception, Village Enterprise has been developing and refining an innovative model of poverty reduction combining training, seed capital grant or non-cash asset transfer, and ongoing mentoring to create small, rural businesses. Village Enterprise’s economic development model plays a unique role in the microfinance industry, providing economic opportunities in rural, agricultural areas that other organizations are not reaching, and gives people living in extreme poverty the opportunity to transform a small grant into a new business, a better standard of living, and hope for the future.  Village Enterprise has started over 48,000 businesses and trained over 185,000 East African people.

Village Enterprise is headquartered in San Carlos, CA and currently operates in Kenya and Uganda.

Position overview: 

Village Enterprise seeks an innovative, detail-orientated, entrepreneurial, and dynamic development professional to help elevate the organization's fundraising, communications, and marketing efforts. This person will enjoy engaging with donors, helping to increase our external visibility, and developing creative and impactful donor communications. In this role, you will assist in sourcing and cultivating prospective donors, conducting donor research, designing integrated fundraising campaigns, creating marketing/communications materials, producing impact reports, compiling data, documenting donor gift and pledge records, and co-owning the management of the website, among other duties. 

Reporting to the Director of Development and Marketing, you will be an integral part of implementing Village Enterprise’s development and marketing/communications plans that aim to help reach the organization’s annual fundraising goals. You must be a development professional with a passion for collaboration. You must be flexible in a global, fast-paced environment and have experience developing and executing against both development and marketing/communications strategy. 

Responsibilities:

Fundraising:

  • Design and execute online campaigns and peer-to-peer fundraising strategies
  • Prepare quarterly major gift renewal letters
  • Manage a pipeline of new donors; ensuring that all new donors are assigned a lead and responded to in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Draft thank-you letters, help produce donor materials and manage other ongoing correspondence with individual donors 
  • Manage communications with all donors $1,000 and under
  • Maintain donor records, pull lists for mailings and analysis
  • Create and run reports for development committee, CEO, and board 
  • Research fundraising best practices and develop new opportunities and ideas
  • Help to manage the planning and execution of donor events and activities
  • Manage existing local external fundraising partnerships and networks while seeking new opportunities 
  • Assist in the development of marketing strategies 
  • Recruit and manage volunteers
  • Assist with other development department projects 

 

Marketing and Communications:

  • Maintain and update the website regularly
  • Support Village Enterprise communications efforts around social media, public relations, internal, external, and executive communications 
  • Assist in optimizing content according to industry best practices in SEO
  • Manage the creation, production, and distribution of Village impact report, monthly ‘eblast’ newsletter and other individual and institutional donor-directed communications
  • Manage email marketing lists; perform A/B testing
  • Use content management systems to analyze website traffic and user engagement metrics
  • Stay up-to-date with developments in the field of poverty alleviation and generate new ideas to draw the audience’s attention
  • Update and maintain a presence on nonprofit evaluation sites GuideStar, Charity Navigator, and Great Nonprofits
  • Maintain and regularly update the inventory of marketing materials (ex. one-pagers, etc.) 
  • Assist in the distribution of articles, blogs, and information about Village Enterprise to partners and other LMOs (Segal, SEEP, TLYCS, etc.)
  • Extremely strong and concise writer 

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Desire, drive, and ability to be an ambassador for the mission and work of Village Enterprise
  • Demonstrate a passion for innovative approaches to poverty reduction around the world, including but not limited to social entrepreneurship and business development in Africa 
  • Bachelor's degree
  • 1-4 years of experience in nonprofit development/fundraising, marketing, communications, philanthropy, corporate social responsibility (CSR), or related fields
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to collaborate with a culturally and geographically diverse team
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented
  • Self-starter with demonstrated ability to initiate, plan, and execute projects
  • Excellent project management skills, including a strong track record of delivering projects on time and within budget
  • Experience in website management and digital marketing
  • Experience in Salesforce data entry and reporting
  • Knowledge of SEO and web traffic metrics
  • Familiarity with social media marketing
  • Highly proficient in Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint templates
  • Flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with Google Analytics/Ads, Facebook Ads 
  • Experience with Mailchimp
  • Knowledge of HTML, Wordpress, CSS, and Javascript
  • Familiarity and experience with Adobe Creative Suite
